Why Your Donation Matters

The Foundation supports hospice and palliative care services and programs that are unfunded or underfunded, yet are critical to delivering exceptional health care services and unique programs to patients and families when they need it most.

Charity Care

Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care serves all in our community in need of healthcare services regardless of their ability to pay. Our Charity Care program supports patients and families without insurance, inadequate insurance coverage or co-payments and deductibles that cannot be paid by the patient or family. Donated dollars allow us to continue our commitment to our community that everyone deserves a dignified and peaceful passing.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care services are provided to patients with a serious or life-limiting illness, who may or may not be terminally ill. Palliative Care focuses on education of the disease process, informed healthcare decision making, completion of advance directives and relieving the patient’s discomfort, stress, and symptoms. Palliative Care services can be provided concurrently with curative or aggressive treatment or therapies by other providers or healthcare institutions. Palliative Care is a service that is appropriate at any age and for any illness. Palliative Care creates an extra layer of support that helps patients stay at home longer, avoid re-hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and improve their quality of life.

Services are provided by a professional team of medical providers. Palliative Care services, in many cases are paid by Medicare, Medicaid and Private Insurers, although payment does not cover the cost of providing community based palliative care services.

Pediatric Care

Pediatric hospice care is provided for children living with a terminal illness. Services provide expert pain and symptom management through a team approach, working alongside the child, their parents, siblings, and grandparents, as well as their community healthcare providers. Our pediatric care services help avoid re-hospitalizations and emergency room visits to improve quality of life.

Pediatric Hospice Care is provided by an interdisciplinary group that includes, physicians, registered nurses, social workers, chaplains and/or hospice aides.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary Therapies are administered through the Volunteer Department, and enhance the patient’s comfort and quality of life by supplementing the medical, physical, emotional, and spiritual care prescribed by the patient’s hospice care team. Research demonstrates the critical role of complementary interventions in relieving stress, decreasing pain, and adding quality to one’s remaining days. Specially trained volunteers administer a variety of therapies including but not limited to Touch Therapies, Certified Pet Therapy Teams, Music Therapy, Aromatherapy, and Soothing Sounds Musicians and Singers.

Complementary Therapy programs have no source of support but through generous donations to our Foundation.

Center for Grief and Loss

Grief is an extremely personal journey, traveled in different ways and at different paces. Our professional grief counselors and trained volunteers ensure bereaved individuals don’t have to make the journey alone.

The Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care Center for Grief and Loss offers a comprehensive menu of grief support and bereavement services so that family members can find an approach that’s right for them. Grief support is available to those whose loved one died under the care of Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care and to our community members. Support from the Foundation allows The Center for Grief and loss to provide the following services to those we cared for and to community members unable to pay for services:

  • One-on-One Counseling, In-Person or Virtual
  • Specialized Grief Support Groups for Adults, Teens, and Children
  • Children’s Grief Camps
  • Tribute Receptions
  • Commemorative Celebrations
  • Grief Newsletters and Educational Materials

Education

The Foundation’s support for educating professionals in our healthcare community and our employees through seminars, presentations, speaking engagements, grand rounds, internship and student rotation programs or other types of professional or community educational presentations or opportunities that seek to expand PPHPC’s mission, services, or commitment to the community. Donations for this program also allow hospice and palliative care professionals to pursue specific educational endeavors, programs, conferences, or academic degrees in subject matter related to quality end of life care.

Public Awareness

Foundation support of Public Awareness activities allows for increased awareness of end-of-life care and debunking the many myths and stigma surrounding hospice and palliative care. Funding is used for public awareness campaigns, direct mail pieces, social media, advertisements, commercials and/or audio outlets.

Sentimental Journeys

Sentimental Journeys is a program offered to patients and their families that provides for special and memorable outings that would not otherwise happen. Donations are used to pay for specialized transportation and professional staff that escort patients on their outings, to provide additional comfort and security. Working in tandem with PPHPC’s professional staff, patients choose special outings/excursions that are meaningful and will enhance their lives. The cost of each Sentimental Journey varies dependent upon the excursion. Weddings, family photography, picnics, sporting events, airline tickets to fly family members into the Springs for final goodbyes, trips to the High Country are all examples of special memories we can create through the donations of supporters.

Patient Special Needs

Patient Special Needs is a specific program created to assist families with emergent needs that cannot be met by any other resource. Frequently, patients and families struggle to live their lives with some semblance of normalcy in meeting everyday needs. This creates an enormous amount of stress on patients and families, as well as hospice professionals providing care when they are facing challenges such as utilities being turned off, eviction, lack of food, clothing, and even limited funeral expenses. The Patient Special Needs program is designed to meet one-time emergent needs for the patient and their family to reduce the stress in their current situation and add to the quality of their lives. Foundation support allows us to provide financial relief to families during their most vulnerable time in life.

Team Member Appreciation

Our hospice and palliative care professionals are highly valued because of the expertise, compassion, and kindness they share each day. They receive so much from the care they provide in our community and at the same time carry the emotional weight that is undeniable in end-of-life care. We recognize and reward team members who demonstrate the values of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care and a commitment to our mission through a variety of internal programs designed to celebrate and reinforce positive employee performance.

We recognize team members during national awareness months, weeks and days including November’s National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, National Nurses Week, National CNA Week, Spiritual Care Week, National Doctor’s Day and World Social Work Day. We host annual celebrations including events such as summer picnics and holiday events. These activities are designed to recognize the dedication, commitment and compassion demonstrated by PPHPC’s employees who deliver quality care and support to our community. Foundation funding allows us to go the extra mile in recognizing the people who work in this specialized niche of healthcare.

Hospice Promise Fund

Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation allows donors to make restricted contributions to its endowment fund, the Hospice Promise Fund. These donations are invested to meet the future needs of patients and families facing life-limiting illness.

How Does it Work?

The fund produces a stream of income used to meet ongoing operational expenses not reimbursed through traditional payer sources. Because of generous donors over the years and conservative investment guidelines, Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation may distribute earnings as needed to Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care. The distribution of the earnings is guided by an Investment Policy.

These dollars are used to cover the unreimbursed costs for programs of care such as Palliative Services, Charity Care, Pediatric Pathways, Complementary Therapies, Sentimental Journey, and Patient Special Needs.

Contributions of any amount are welcome. We look forward to reporting the impact your donations make to our patients and families in need. Donate to the Hospice Promise Fund online today. Be sure to check the box “Endowment Fund” under the “Use My Gift” heading on the form. Thank you for your generous support!

Planned Giving

Planned giving allows you to make a great difference in the lives of patients and families, while taking advantage of unique tax savings and/or income benefits.
The following are the most common types of planned gifts. These are simply an overview of your options, and are not intended to constitute tax, accounting, or legal advice. Donors should consult with their own professional advisors regarding a planned gift.

Bequest

A bequest through a will or living trust does not reduce your current income yet enables you to provide substantial future support for a cause you care about. You may specify that Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation receives:
• A specific dollar amount
• A percentage of your estate
• Certain assets such as real estate
• A remainder of your estate after everyone else is provided for

Charitable Trusts

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a special tax-exempt trust to which you can give appreciated stock or real estate. The trust then provides you with an income stream for life, and upon your death, all assets remaining in the trust pass directly to Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation. You also bypass all capital gains taxes on the appreciated property, and further receive a current charitable income tax deduction.

Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance enables you to make a substantial future gift to Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation without financial impact during your lifetime. You can donate a policy you already own that no longer serves its original purpose, a policy you buy to specifically benefit Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, or a policy in which you name Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation as a contingent beneficiary.

Retirement Plan Assets

Retirement plan assets are different from most other assets a person owns. At death, most retirement plans are subject to an estate tax and income tax. Because of the income tax levied on most retirement plan assets when they are transferred, those assets are ideal to fund a charitable gift at death.
