From retired flags to honored veterans
A special partnership with Scouting America Troop 199 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26 helps ensure the legacy of service continues through meaningful gifts for veteran patients
This week, Sonya Bergeron, Veteran Liaison of Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, had the honor of attending Scouting America Troop 199’s annual flag retirement ceremony.
When the United States flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged, it is no longer fitting for display and should be respectfully retired. This meaningful ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of the respect and care our nation’s flag deserves. The process is carried out with intention and dignity—carefully separating the flag in a way that honors its symbolism and service.
Following the ceremony, Sonya was grateful to receive individual stars from previously retired flags, generously provided by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26. These stars will be shared with our veteran patients as a small but meaningful gesture of recognition and appreciation for their service.
Moments like these are a powerful reminder of the continued ways we can honor those who have served—through tradition, respect, and heartfelt connection.
