OUR HISTORY

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, the only nonprofit hospice in the Colorado Springe metro area, traces its roots to the late 1970s, when community volunteers Flo Carris and Susan Langstaff recognized a need in Colorado Springs for compassionate, end-of-life care. With support from donors and fellow volunteers, they founded what would become Pikes Peak Hospice, formally beginning operations in 1980. Over the years, it has expanded significantly: in 1986 it opened Colorado’s first free-standing hospice residence, then in the 1990s it consolidated inpatient services into a residence at St. Francis Hospital. The organization’s administrative and clinical operations later moved into a shared building for efficiency, and in 2016 it joined Care Synergy, a nonprofit network of Front Range hospice, palliative care, and elder care providers. In 2025, Pikes Peak Hospice celebrated its 45th anniversary with the opening of Colorado Springs’ only hospice Inpatient Care Center. The Inpatient Care Center features 12 private suites, a family kitchen and dining area, a great room, a chapel, a veterans’ reflection room, a children's play area, and beautiful gardens — a milestone underscoring decades of dedication from staff, volunteers, and donors to serving patients with dignity.
