Embracing the Hospice Philosophy

Designed for Specialized End-of-Life Care and Meeting the Unique Needs of Individuals

In the late 1970s, community volunteers Flo Carris and Susan Langstaff saw an opportunity to meet a profound need in the Colorado Springs community. Joined by many volunteers and financial supporters, Carris and Langstaff established hospice care in El Paso County, Colorado. Through this commitment, terminally ill individuals and their loved ones were ensured a compassionate, comfortable, and dignified life closure. This vision became Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.

Our Growth Since Inception in 1980

Grace Episcopal Church donates administrative office space at 601 N. Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

1986

1986
Hospice Care Residence opens at 1333 Darby Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (Holland Park) in October 1986. This was the first free-standing hospice care residence in the state of Colorado.

1988

1988
Offices move from Grace Episcopal Church to 622 South Tejon, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 (first rented space). Hospice Care Residence (Darby Street) mortgage paid in full.

1990

1990
Hospice at the Mount, a 13 bed facility housed in a private wing of St. Francis Nursing Center, 7665 Assisi Heights, Colorado Springs, CO 80919, opens in September.

1992

1992
Administrative staff moves to new office space at Sinton Pond West, 3630 Sinton Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80907 in the summer of 1992.

1994

1994
Hospice at the Mount closes on October 30, 1994. On the next day, the Central Residence with 18 beds opens on the fifth floor of St. Francis Health Center (SFHC), formally known as St. Francis Hospital, at 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Pikes Peak Hospice expands to offer care in all licensed nursing homes.

1995

Consolidated inpatient facility care at Pikes Peak Central Residence (two leased floors-30 patient rooms) on the 4th and 5th floors at 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903, to be called Pikes Peak Hospice Residence. On December 8th, our nationally-renowned Hospice Care Residence (a.k.a. West Residence) is sold and closed after nine years as a facility option.

1996

1996
5th floor moves to the fourth floor (Pikes Peak Hospice Residence) in the St. Francis Health Center, 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 and Darby House closes. This increases the number of available beds to 37.

2000

2000
Administrative Offices move from Sinton Pond West, 3630 Sinton Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80907 to 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue (St. Francis Health Center) in March. For the first time in the history of Pikes Peak Hospice (PPH), all operations are housed in the same building. PPH is now housed on the fourth floor (the Residence) and sixth floor (Administration).

North Office opens at 4005 Lee Vance View, Colorado Springs, CO 80918 on March 24, 2005.

2011

2011
The Pikes Peak Hospice Unit at Penrose Hospital is opened in July on the 6th floor – West Tower, 2222 North Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.

2012

2012
Administrative Offices move from 825 E. Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 (St. Francis Health Center) to 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 in June.

2016

2016
Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care becomes affiliated with Care Synergy.

2020

2020
40th anniversary of Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.
