Talking about end-of-life care can sometimes feel difficult, but having these conversations before a crisis occurs can make an important difference for individuals and their loved ones.
Last night, members of the Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care team had the opportunity to provide education to residents of the Casa Verde community on end-of-life planning, palliative care and hospice.
The opportunity came through Casa Verde’s CARES team, which wanted to ensure residents had access to information about how to express and document their wishes and better understand the options available to them.
End-of-life planning is ultimately about making sure your voice is heard.
By thinking about your wishes ahead of time and documenting them, you can help your loved ones and healthcare providers understand what matters most to you if you are ever unable to speak for yourself.
During the presentation, the Pikes Peak Hospice team discussed the importance of advance care planning and provided information about palliative care and hospice. The conversation gave residents an opportunity to learn more, ask questions and consider how they want to approach their own future healthcare decisions.
The attendees were engaged throughout the presentation and actively participated with thoughtful questions. Their appreciation for the information and willingness to have an open conversation demonstrated just how valuable these opportunities are.
Education is an important part of helping people understand the difference between palliative care and hospice and when each type of support may be appropriate.
Palliative care can provide an added layer of support for people living with serious illness, while hospice focuses on comfort and quality of life when a person is nearing the end of life.
Having information about these services before they are urgently needed allows individuals and families to make decisions from a place of greater understanding and preparedness.
The evening also included an unexpected and meaningful connection to the history of Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.
Among the attendees was an original Pikes Peak Hospice employee. Seeing someone who was part of the organization in its early days was a wonderful reminder of the many dedicated individuals who have helped build Pikes Peak Hospice and advance its mission of compassionate care throughout the years.
Those connections matter. They remind us that the work we do today is part of a much longer story of caring for people and families in our community.
We are grateful to the Casa Verde CARES team for recognizing the importance of this education and inviting Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care to be part of the conversation.
Whether it is learning how to document your wishes, understanding palliative care or exploring hospice services, having information and talking about these topics early can help individuals and families feel more prepared when important decisions arise.
At Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, we are honored to help our community have these conversations and understand the choices available to them.
Planning ahead is one way we can make sure the care we receive reflects what matters most to us.
